The cross-border emergency healthcare initiative under the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) PA10 is a major effort to improve access to healthcare and cooperation between countries along the Danube and also one of PA10 Flagship Projects.

This initiative recognises the importance of addressing health challenges across borders and seeks to improve cooperation in areas such as emergency medical care, disease prevention and health infrastructure development. Furthermore, it focuses on strengthening partnerships among countries, healthcare institutions, and stakeholders to foster the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and best practices. Moreover, it emphasises the importance of simplifying administrative procedures to facilitate cross-border patient mobility and improve healthcare outcomes for the region’s population, contributing overall to PA10 Action 2: To fascilitate the administrative cooperation of communities living in border regions.

One recent example of committing to the cause is the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Croatia and the Government of the Republic of Slovenia on cross-border cooperation in the provision emergency health care. Furthermore, the EMERGENCY EuroRegion project, within the Cooperation Programme INTERREG V-A Slovenia – Croatia) is another good example of a successful cooperation project in the field of emergency cross-border healthcare between two countries.

Additonally, recognising the significance of sustainable healthcare systems, participating countries are actively collaborating to secure adequate funding for cross-border healthcare projects and initiatives. This includes exploring funding opportunities through various mechanisms, such as EU grants. By pooling financial recourses and leveraging external funding, the initiative aims to ensure the successful implementation of cross- border healthcare programs.

By promoting cross-border partnerships and sharing best practices, the cross-border healthcare initiative aims to ensure that residents of the Danube Region can benefit from high-quality healthcare services. Through the exchange of knowledge and expertise, the initiative fosters continuous improvement in healthcare practices and strengthens the region´s capacity to respond to emergencies effectively. Thus, cross-border emergency healthcare stands as a testament to the commitment of participating countries to prioritise the health and well-being of individuals living in the Danube Region.
